Blackwood Valley Wine Industry Association

The Blackwood Valley Wine Industry Association was formed in 1996 following an increase in the number of vineyard plantings in the region in the mid 1990's. The Association represents grape growers and wine producers in the Blackwood Valley Region, promotingits high quality fruit and wines, as well as providing a forum for members to share information and link to the Wine Industry Association of WA. Growers and producers within the Blackwood Valley Region who are interested in becoming members are encouraged to contact the Secretary at bvwia@westnet.com.au for further information or for a membership form.

The Association also hosts the Blackwood Valley & WA Boutique Wine Show which is held in October each year.  The show has increased from a regional show to cover all boutique winemakers across Western Australia. See the Wine Show page for further details on the show including entry, awards and events.

The Blackwood Valley Region

The Blackwood River is the longest, continually flowing river in the south west of Western Australia. It flows for 270km from the southern wheatbelt to the ocean at Flinders Bay, Augusta. Over the years it has shaped one of the most scenic areas of Western Australia, the Blackwood Valley with undulating hills, steep valleys, with marri, jarrah and karri forests, together with picturesque towns, fertile farmlands, orchards, and vineyards. There are over 50 vineyards in the Blackwood Valley and over 20 Wine producers, many with cellar doors.

The Blackwood Valley is located east of the Margaret River Wine Region and north west of the Great Southern Wine Region at 33 degrees South and 115 degrees East with an elevation of 100 metres in the West to 340 metres in the East. The major towns in the valley are Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Greenbushes, Balingup and Nannup. It has a Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and cold wet winters. The Blackwood Valley is on the same latitude as Margaret River, however, being further inland has cooler winters and slightly warmer summers. The mean January temperature is 20.7 degrees C. The annual rainfall ranges from 600-900mm.
